In the context of bone tissue regeneration, bioactive materials are capable of bonding to living bone through the formation of bone-like apatite on their surface when implanted in the living body. In the 2000s, bioceramics were designed with porous structure bearing a micro- porosity equivalent to bone in an attempt to improve their efficiency for bone tissue regeneration, giving rise to mesoporous materials and organic-inorganic hybrids. This in vitro behavior suggests these biopolymer- coated (gelatine cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and polycaprolactone) nanocrys- talline hydroxyapatite macroporous foams as promising candidates as scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration. Chapter 5 will describe some of the recent applications of MBGs aimed at designing 3D scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration purposes. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials still offer a great range of possibilities that are very interesting for bone tissue regeneration applications, and this is the reason why there is a lot of research being conducted nowadays in this particular area.
